What do you do for a living?

I'm a Corporate Banker.

How did you start off with volunteering?

It was more out of boredom at first as I didn't have anything in particular to do after work. So one fine day (thanks to magic that's Google), I came across Volunteer in Dubai website and that was it, been with them ever since.

What is your favourite thing about volunteering?

Best thing about it is definitely the satisfaction which one cannot have any other way i.e., to know that I have made a difference in someone's life, that even though I am one in 7 billion plus humans on this planet yet I have become part of group of a select few who are willing to give time out of their daily lives to make things better for others. In addition, I have been lucky enough to meet some of the best people in Dubai and honored to call them my best friends.

Describe your work as a Project Manager. What is it you do, and how do you do it?

I am PM for Operation Ozone and as the name suggests, its related to volunteering for our one and only planet. Lola saw my interest in nature and allocated this project to me. This project is all about caring for our planet, Dubai is a place where people like to venture out of the city and spend time in the desert and on the beaches. And although, most of the people do care about environment, there are few who don't show respect and this results in trash (specially inorganic) being spread all over the desert area frequented by residents. Our main focus is to clear such areas as much as we can so that this natural wonder is kept in a good shape for generations to come.

Second part of this project deals in clearing different beaches of Dubai from cigarette butts. Loads and loads of people flock to Dubai beaches all year long but some of them don't bother to throw cigarette butts all over the beaches. Although, municipality tries to keep beaches clean, they are unable to clean the cigarette butts and hence that's our focus. Here I would like to give a shout to Faisal Shalmani, Mostafa Ebrahim and Tarek Zeidan, without their continuous support, it won't be possible.

In what ways is your work as a Project Manager different from (or similar to) what you expected?

I have been with VIUAE for the last three years now and during this period, I have worked closely with various PMs and this had helped me get an idea as to how things work. So I can say it was more like what I had expected. But yes surely there are times when you need support and guidance and Lola and all other PMs are always more than willing to help.

Can you recall any heart-warming experiences you’ve had as a Project Manager and volunteer?

Well the people I have met through this platform are one of a kind, always ready to help and support in whichever way you need and I think every moment spent with them is a hear-warming experience for me.

What would you say to a future Project Manager?

Put your head down, keep doing the good work without expecting anything in return and stay humble wherever or whatever you are, and see how it impacts people around you.

Where do you originally come from and how long have you been in the UAE?

I'm from Pakistan and it's been 7 years since I have been in the UAE

What do you like to do in your spare time when you aren’t volunteering!!?

I love hiking, camping and climbing.
